On a cold Saturday night in December the Oxford Chargers dropped their first game of the season to the Picayune Maroon Tide by the score of 42-35 in the class 5A state championship game.
Oxford came into the game looking for their first ever state championship in football as they have rolled this season by winning 14 straight games. The Chargers looked determined to achieve success as both teams answered each other’s scores with their own.
At the half, Oxford and Picayune were deadlocked at 21 points.
Oxford came out in the third quarter and reeled off 14 unanswered points to take a 35-21 lead over Picayune. That was capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by sophomore Kenzie Phillips. Phillips ended the night with three of the Chargers five touchdowns.
Picayune battled back in the fourth quarter to score 21 unanswered points. Starting with a touchdown pass, then back-to-back touchdown runs for the Maroon Tide. Those touchdowns would give the Maroon Tide the lead and the victory by a final score of 42-35.
Oxford finishes the season with a record of 14-1 and accomplished the school’s first 14 win season. For Picayune they end the season with a record of 12-2.
