Tupelo High Faces Off Against Oak Grove and Brett Favre

The Tupelo High School Golden Wave will end its season Friday night in Jackson at the Mississippi Class 6A State Football Championship against the Oak Grove High School Warriors. Tupelo will also be competing against Oak Grove’s legendary offensive coordinator, Brett Favre.
The Golden Wave comes into the game with a 13-1 record and are riding a six-game winning streak. Their one loss this season was to the South Panola Tigers, 14-8. In a rematch last week against the Tigers, the Golden Wave was victorious 12-3 to reach the state championship.
Tupelo defeated Warren Central in the first round of the playoffs 20-17, then defeated Madison Central 27-15. Last week, they defeated South Panola in the final round.
The Golden Wave is lead on offense by senior Quinn Tiggs. Tiggs has rushed for 1,400 yards on 206 carries and 13 touchdowns this season. Tiggs also has 49 receptions for 569 yards receiving and two touchdowns. The last two games he rushed for 100 yards in each game. Last week against South Panola, Tiggs ran for 115 yards on 18 carries.
The big story for this game that has garnered national attention is the Oak Grove offensive coordinator, and former NFL quarterback, Brett Favre. Favre is from Kiln, Mississippi and played at the University of Southern Mississippi before moving on to the NFL. Since retiring, Favre helps coach at Oak Grove and spends more time with his family.
He isn’t just walking the sidelines with an honorary title. He helped Oak Grove average 41.6 points per game this season and dominate their schedule with a 13-1 record. The Warriors are ranked number one in the state of Mississippi going into tonight’s game.
Favre’s coaching has obviously influenced Oak Grove senior quarterback Kirk McCarty. McCarty has completed 246 of 400 passes this season for an astounding 3,782 yards, 42 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Keeping Favre on the sidelines next season will be key to continuing Oak Grove’s success at quarterback.
Tupelo’s defense is solid this year and will have to play their best game if they want to slow down this electric Warrior offense.
