Oxford to play for the class 5A state title
The cold temperatures in the area did not affect the Oxford Chargers on Friday night as they are headed back to play for the state championship for the first time in ten years. Oxford defeated the Callaway Chargers by the score of 23-7.
Oxford came out of the locker room to start the game rolling by putting up a quick 14 points in the first quarter. Sophomore Kenzie Phillips gave Oxford an early lead with a rushing touchdown. Then Jack Abraham found wide receiver Joey Walden for the second Charger touchdown on the night.
Both defenses dug in the second quarter not allowing either offense to put any points on the board. At the half Oxford led Callaway 14-0.
When the teams returned to the field in the third quarter, Callaway’s defense stepped up and forced the Chargers to punt. Callaway returned the punt to Oxford’s five-yard line. Then Callaway picked up its lone touchdown by a one-yard rush by TJ Washington.
After the Callaway touchdown Oxford’s defense did not let Callaway move the ball much the rest of the game.
Oxford held Callaway to 26-rushing yards; 114-yards passing and forcing four turn overs on the night. Oxford on the other hand, gained103-yards on the ground and 274-yards thru the air.
Up next for Oxford is a matchup against Picayune out of south Mississippi on Dec. 7 at 7:30p.m. for the class 5A state championship in Jackson, Miss.

Lafayette to play for the class 4A state title
The Lafayette Commodores defeated Cleveland on Friday night by the score of 42-19 to advance to the class 4A state championship.
The dual threat quarterback Devin Thomas led the way for the Commodores as he threw for two touchdowns and rushed for an additional two. Lafayette opened the game with a rushing touchdown from Rashun Rockette in the first quarter.
At the half Lafayette led Cleveland by the score of 28-13.
As the fourth quarter began, the Commodores had increased their lead by an additional 16 points.
Up next for Lafayette is a game on Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. against Forrest County Agricultural.
