Women’s Golf Travels To Prestigious Landfall Traditional

Rebels Close Fall Action In North Carolina

The Ole Miss women’s golf team comes to their final fall tournament this weekend, as they travel to Wilmington, N.C. for the 12th Annual Landfall Tradition hosted by UNC-Wilmington.

The tournament begins Friday, Oct. 25th and will go through Sunday, Oct. 27th. The tournament features an 18-team field, with four teams ranked in the top 25. Joining Ole Miss will be No. 3 Alabama, No. 8 Arizona, Clemson, No. 2 Duke, Iowa St., Michigan St., North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, No. 7 Purdue, South Carolina, UNC Greensboro, host UNCW, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Oklahoma State comes in as defending champions, although the 2012 Landfall Tradition was cut to just one round due to Hurricane Sandy. Ole Miss finished 15th last year.

“We have had some time between our last tournament at UNC and this one at UNC-Wilmington,” said head coach Michele Drinkard. “During that time we looked at our individual stats and continued to look at areas we can improve. Most importantly I am looking for our team to continue with focusing on our mindset and how we handle staying in the now.”

Ole Miss will maintain the same starting five from the past two tournaments. Alison Hovatter, Abby Newton, Taelor Rubin, Stani Schiavone and Maria Toennessen will each make the trip to North Carolina.

The Rebels will be playing their second consecutive tournament in the state of North Carolina, after finishing tied for 13th at the Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 11-13. The Landfall Tradition will also mean another trip to Rubin’s home state. Ole Miss will be participating in the tournament for the third consecutive season, first playing at the tournament during the 2011-12 season.

The tournament will be played on the Country Club of Landfall Dye Course, a par-72 course with a yardage of 6,204 The Pete Dye Course was home to the 2010 NCAA Championship.

“This week we play the Dye Course at Landfall which has hosted an NCAA Championship,” said Drinkard. “It has proven to be a challenging course and will take a good strategy by each player to score constantly on this course.”
