Is Sustainability Sustainable For Business?

Panel of corporate supporters will discuss principle and practice of sustainability

OXFORD, Miss.  –  Many organizations preach a commitment to sustainability, but how does it work in practice?  A panel discussion at the University of Mississippi featuring leading corporate sustainability supporters will spotlight how concern for our natural environment can be good for business.

“Sustainability in Business and Everyday Life,” sponsored by the Meek School of Journalism and New Media, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15, 6-7 p.m. at the Overby Center on campus.  The event is free and open to the public.

Panel participants will be Kyle Margolis, Sustainability Communications, International Paper; Karen Ellis, Managing Director, Global Environmental Mgt., FedEx; Max Shilstone, Director, Business Development, Clean Line Energy, and Ian Banner, Director of the Office of Sustainability at the University. Charles Mitchell, Asst. Dean at the Meek School, will moderate.

“Most of us understand the need to conserve our resources and protect the environment,” said Dean Mitchell. “It’s exciting to learn that some of our leading companies see sustainability as an opportunity, not a burden.”

Panelists will share how their companies view sustainability, what sustainability initiatives are under way and how employees and other stakeholders are carrying out these initiatives. Panelists reflect a breadth of experience in the principle and practice of sustainability. They will provide concrete examples of how the concept contributes to success in business and everyday life.

The Overby Center for Southern Journalism & Politics focuses on the role of the First Amendment in our society. Located next to the journalism department in Farley Hall, the Overby Center offers state-of-the-art conference facilities. It is named for Charles Overby, former chairman and CEO of the Freedom Forum and the Newseum.
