Bring it on Home at Proud Larrys’ This Weekend
Locally sourced farm-to-eardrum music on tap, starting Thursday.
Ole Miss fans like to visit their favorite haunts when they come to down for a big game, and the Texas A&M weekend will be no exception. They also get excited to see and hear some of the Oxford live music they’ve been missing.
Proud Larrys’ understands that demand and is meeting it this weekend with Rocket 88 (with George McConnell), the Kudzu Kings, and Jimbo Mathus.
THURSDAY — Rocket 88 w/ Special Guest George McConnell ($8)
The honey blonde harmonies of husband-and-wife duo Jamie and Rosamond Posey float on top of a rhythm section comprised of Nate Robbins on bass, Robert Chaffe on keys, Ryan Rogers on drums. Jamie Posey’s chicken-pickin’ Telecaster cuts through the BS to round out the Rocket 88 sound. Frequent collaborate George McConnell of Beanland and the Kudzu Kings takes the Rocket to another dimension.
FRIDAY — Kudzu Kings ($15)
Their shows are rare these days, making the Friday set all the more must-see. Tate Moore, Max Williams, George McConnell, Robert Chaffe, Daniel Karlish, Dave Woolworth, and C. D. Overton will present the Kudzu Katalog of Tate Moore originals and tastefully selected covers. The dynamic of a Kudzu Kings night involves tones of folk, country, and rock. They are, depending on the song, Oxford’s answer to NRBQ, the Flying Burrito Brothers, or Black Sabbath.
SATURDAY — Jimbo Mathus & the Tri-State Coalition ($10)
Former Squirrel Nut Zipper and current honkey hustler Jimbo Mathus is the greasy main course of a tight-but-sloppy collection of players—including Eric “Carlos” Carlton (keys), Ryan Rogers (drums), and Matt Pierce (guitar) comfortable with country, funk, and the getting out of ya-ya’s.
