“Shape and Form” new works on paper by Kate Roebuck display at Southside Gallery in September

Kate Roebuck will exhibit works on paper at Southside Gallery from September 3–28.  Roebuck, a textile designer who recently moved from Oxford to Chattanooga, Tenn., has displayed her work in two group exhibitions at Southside over the past year.  This will be her first solo exhibition at the gallery.

Roebuck grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa.  She attended college at The University of Georgia where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art with a specialization in textile design.  She is currently a designer for Hable Construction, a textile company based out of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Athens, Ga.

For Roebuck, the process of design and rendering are both points of emphasis.

She describes her technique as a melding of two distinct disciplines.  Her artistic interest is in how the different media she works with (primarily watercolor, gouache, ink and pencil) interact with paper, while her experience as a designer leads her to focus her interests on a central motif.  Her paintings have a sense of spontaneity tempered with symmetry and accord.

Schematically, Roebuck’s work meets at an elegant intersection of fine art and design where artistic inspirations are informed by basic design elements critical to the conceptual balance she is trying to meet between the two provinces.

Her art has a minimalist quality that is straightforward and palpable.  Compositionally the watercolors and gouache washes by Roebuck range from colorful rhythmic patterns to tonal flat shapes, all presented on a stark white background.  The scale and format of her paintings vary, and are equally impressive large or small.

“This is an exciting show,” said Wil Cook, employee of Southside Gallery.  “It’s one of the first of its kind that we’ve had here.  I believe it will appeal to a broad audience and may even attract some new visitors to the gallery.  Kate’s work is very unique.”

An artist’s reception is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 27, 6:30 – 8:30 PM.  For more information, contact Southside Gallery at (662) 234-9090.
