The Square is usually filled with dogs and cats on leashes, but this week one local spotted a chicken tethered to one.
The chicken, more lovingly referred to as Sammi, is actually quite famous. She has more than 20,000 followers on Instagram and 2,200 likes on Facebook.
Sammi’s dad, Dave, is originally from Colorado. He said he got tired of the cold and snow and decided to move to Florida three years ago. Though he’s stationed in Florida, he said one of his favorite things is taking Sammi on weekend trips.
“Some of the places we have visited were those that we are glad we could say we’ve been, but not a place we’d want to go back,” he said. “Then there have been other visits that I wish we’d had more time. Oxford, Mississippi was one of those. It is a beautiful city and the folks were all very nice and hospitable. I am very glad we had Oxford on our list and plan to return someday to see more of the surrounding area.”
Dave said he originally started taking Sammi with him to the beach, and when people would see them out in the water they would take pictures and want to tag them on Instagram. After being asked several times, he said he finally set up an account.
Sammi’s following grew from there, including a feature in The Dodo, The Today Show, and People.
Here are a few views Sammi relished in while she was in Oxford:
