Ole Miss Softball Head Coach Mike Smith Resigns

Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter announced on Sunday that head softball coach Mike Smith has resigned from his position. No details have been released surrounding his resignation.

“We are committed to a healthy culture and overall experience for our student-athletes,” Carter said. “Our primary focus is to foster success for everyone involved with our program, on and off the field, while continuing our rise as one of the premier softball programs in the nation. Coach Smith helped establish our softball program as a national contender and we wish him all the best.”
Smith was placed administrative leave from the team on Nov. 19 due to an external audit of the program. That was the second time Smith was placed on paid leave in 2019. Prior to the start of last season, he could not travel with his club to the Friends of Jaclyn Tournament in Orlando Feb. 7-9 because of similar violations.
During Smith’s tenure with the Rebels over the past five seasons, he accurued an overall record of 187-112. His teams earned four NCAA Regional berths and twice advanced to Super Regionals. Under his leadership, his team won the SEC Championship in 2017.
This season, Ole Miss will be led by interim coach Ruben Felix who stepped into this role in November.
Ole Miss returns to the diamond in January with workouts and practice in anticipation for the first game of the season. The athletic department has not released the season slate.
