The Lafayette County School District Board elected its 2020 officers Monday night, along with announcing $15,317 in grant money given to teachers this semester.

The new president of the board will be Dr. Judith Thompson, and the new secretary will be Mike Gooch.

Gooch was also elected to replace Brent Larson on the Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology Board following Larson’s election to the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors.

The school board will likely appoint someone to replace Larson on the board in November 2020, according to Superintendent Adam Pugh.

Thompson has served on the school board for 16 years. She has been an elementary school teacher, assistant principal and principal. Thompson has also served as the director of ICS Early Head Start and IHL Barksdale Reading Institute, as well as serving on several other non-profit boards throughout the state.

Gooch is a U.S. Army veteran and currently serves as the director of the Oxford Diagnostic Center. He was sworn in as a member of the Lafayette County School Board in January.

Also on Monday, Pam Swain, president of the Lafayette Endowment Fund for Education, presented grants previously awarded to teachers for the fall 2019 semester. The recipients included six Lower Elementary teachers, three Upper Elementary teachers, five Middle School teachers, and two High School teachers for a total of $15,317 in grant money awarded.

In the lower elementary, students will benefit from new literacy items, Chromebook flips, a 3D printer, equipment for various sports and a tower garden. Upper elementary students have a new collaborative classroom library, Chromebooks and a library book series.

For middle school students, the grants made available new iPads, a ham radio package kit, and balance stability ball chairs as alternative seating for students with ADHD or ADD. Several middle and high school theater students will also be able to go to theater competitions thanks to the grants.

The high school gained mechanical wave lab equipment and student registration fees for the Mississippi School of Math and Sciences math competition.
