Luncheon Introduces Young Girl Scouts to Women of Distinction in Community

The Girl Scouts Heart of the South will be hosting their 9th annual Women’s of Distinction Luncheon in Oxford Wednesday, Nov. 6 at First Baptist Church. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

They are dedicating this luncheon to the women of the Lafayette, Oxford, and University area who show excellent leadership and service. These nominees are selected due to their accomplishments, contributions, and leadership that has inspired young women.

This year’s nominees are Dr. Premalatha Balachandran, Julia Blackmon, Elizabeth Heiskell, Lynnette Johnson, Kent Magee, Helen Phillips, Jenny Rayner, Audra Rester and Ashley Wilkinson.

The special guest speaker will be the Reverend Dr. Ethel Young Scurlock.

Chief Community Engagement Officer, Jenny Jones, is excited about how much the event has grown and all of the support that has been shown by the local community.

“This event has grown tremendously over the years and we are extremely grateful to the local community and sponsors who have given to continue our success,” she said. “Funds raised by the event benefit our Girl Scout scholarships, camp programs, volunteer support and leadership development opportunities for girls.”

Jones said they are excited for young girl scouts to meet these women that they believe have exemplified what a woman of distinction looks like.

Vicki Sneed, who is a part of the Girl’s Scout Heart of the South committee, looks to inspire girl scouts to have them take their place one day. 

“Girl Scouts are some of those who will carry on what we have started, attend to those things which we believe are so important, take over our committees and have a voice in our churches, schools, universities and corporations,” she said. 

Members of the Girl Scouts Heart of the South said they are very grateful and honored to have such support from their donors and sponsors.

“We could not provide the innovative programming and girl-centric opportunities that girl scouting offers without the support of our sponsors and donors,” Jones said.
