Rebels Drop A Heartbreaker to Texas A&M 24-17

Ole Miss dropped a tightly contested game to the Texas A&M Aggies 24 – 17 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night.
“I want to thank the fans. That was an unbelievable atmosphere tonight and I am grateful for everyone showing up,” Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke said. “I am sorry that we came up short. We are going to continue to work hard. There are bunch of guys in that locker room who are hurt.”
Ole Miss (3-5, 2-3 SEC) tried to climb out of a 10-point deficit to the Aggies in the final minute. After a field goal, the Rebels were unable to secure the onside kick to possibly send the game into over time.
“The defense played their guts and gave us a chance to win the football game,” Luke said. “ Offense did not make enough plays and the turnovers where huge. They had a chance to go up two scores and had several opportunities to make plays down the field, but did not make them. Give Texas A&M credit, they made the plays where we didn’t.”
The Rebels used both signal callers in John Rhys Plumlee and Matt Corral. Texas A&M held Plumlee to only 38 yards with his legs on 13 touches and only allowed him to pass for only 43 yards. Corral in the second half found his rhythm as he went 9-for-17 for 112 yards with one interception.
Texas A&M’s quarterback Kellen Mond finished the game throwing for 172 yards with one touchdown. He also added 76 yards on the ground on 15 carries.
The Aggies gained momentum in the third quarter on 62 yard fumble recovery that answered Ole Miss’ go ahead touchdown by Snoop Conner. Conner finished with five touches for 52 yards.
Ole Miss’ freshman running back Jerrion Ealy carried the ball six times for 80 yards. Ealy’ broke a run from scrimmage early in the contest for 69 yards as he reached pay dirt.
The Rebels defense was led in tackles by inside linebacker Lakia Henry with nine and his teammate defensive end Josiah Coatney was right on his heels as he recorded seven total tackles on the night.
“We gotta move on into the bye week and get healthy and finish November strong,” Luke said.
Ole Miss travels to Auburn to start the calendar slate of games in November.
