It’s unofficially official – Waffle House is coming to Oxford and will be serving waffles, burgers and more in Oxford Commons.

On Monday during the Oxford Planning Commission meeting, Senior Associate Planning Director Judy Daniel presented the preliminary and final plat for a .6 acre lot along Ed Perry Boulevard (formerly) Oxford Commons Boulevard north of Commonwealth Boulevard, north of the Malco Oxford Commons.

Daniel said the lot is being “created to accommodate a new restaurant,” and then said, “Waffle House.”

A site plan for the restaurant is expected to go before the Planning Commission in November.

The plat presented for consideration Monday only shows the lot and its dimensions. Access to the restaurant will be from a new access drive on the north side of the lot.

No other details about the restaurant were released Monday including when construction would begin.

However, in September, Bobby Garner, senior vice president of Waffle House and Ole Miss alumnus of 1978, said Waffle House was “aggressively looking at sites to build a Waffle House location in Oxford.” Garner was in Oxford on Sept. 3 during National Waffle Week where he and other Waffle House employees set up a pop-up Waffle House on the Square near City Hall.

Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill used the power of social media, along with law professor David Case, to let the corporation know that the restaurant would be a great addition to the Oxford community.

The Twitter conversation between Tannehill and Case caught the attention of Waffle House corporation who joined in on the fun Tweeting “There’s a steep competition between Oxford and San Antonio for the most passionate city for us…”

Using the hashtag @WaffleHouseinOxfordMS, others started posting their wishes for a Waffle House in Oxford, sharing posts and presenting challenges for others to do that same.

The planning commission approved the preliminary and final plat unanimously.
