Lafayette Leaders Renew MS Critterz Contract for Another Year

The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors renewed its contract with MS Critterz for another year during their regular meeting on Monday.
Renewal of the contract follows a recent controversy regarding the shelter’s previous president, Gail Brown, who stepped down as president last month after racist comments made on her Facebook page several years ago resurfaced. Brown still serves on the board.
MS Critterz is contracted by the city of Oxford and Lafayette County and its workers are not employees of the city or county.
MS Critterz was selected by Oxford and Lafayette officials to run the animal shelter on McElroy Drive last year. The Oxford Board of Aldermen also renewed its annual contract with the organization last month.
The supervisors voted to pay $97,200 to MS Critterz with an additional $40,000 capital donation for a new transport van.
The city pays about $106,000 annually; however, some of those funds go toward animal control services that only occurs inside the city limits. Lafayette County only pays MS Critterz for running the shelter for stray animals in the county.
Traditionally, more stray cats and dogs are picked up in the county than inside the city limits.
