A special, free event Saturday at the LOU Barksdale Boys and Girls Clubhouse aims at helping parents feel more included, informed and empowered when it comes to their child’s education.

The two-hour Educational Super Saturday event is presented by the Boys and Girls Club and three of the Alumnae Chapters of historically black sororities at the University of Mississippi – Oxford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Mu Chi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; and the Oxford Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Clubhouse located at 413 Washington Avenue.

Topics that will be covered are standards-based grading, parent/teacher communication, the A.V.I.D program, and the Third-Grade Reading Gate.

“The presentations will not be lecture-based, they will be discussion-based,” said Erica Avent, one of the event chairs and Oxford Intermediate School intervention coordinator. “Our purpose is to make parents feel engaged in the discussion. These are their children and we only want this event to serve as a helpful agent for them as parents.”

Avent said any parent who is vested and concerned about their child’s academic progress should attend the event Saturday.

“This event is important because many parents feel as though they are not able to attend events at the school because of work schedules and other reasons,” she said. “This causes them to feel uninformed … This event brings important information to parents in an alternate setting. In order for every parent to feel informed, our sororities wanted to find inventive ways to equip them with the answers to questions that we hear parents asking in the community.”

Presenters will be Avent, Assistant Superintendent of Oxford Schools Bradley Roberson, A.V.I.D District Coordinator Marilyn Barnes and third-grade reading teacher Kimesha Worthy.

Childcare will not be available during the event, but children are welcome to attend with their parents.
