Oxford residents have a chance to give back to the community by helping local families with back-to-school supplies by donating to the Junior Auxiliary of Oxford’s Stuff the Bus event.
Donations can be dropped off 7 p.m. tonight through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Drop-off zones will be at Walgreens, CVS, Dollar General on Old Sardis Road and Office Depot.
Stuff the Bus is a program through Junior Auxiliary where members donate their time to collect school supplies at various locations around town. The supplies are combined to fill backpacks with supplies for children in need in the Oxford community as well as have back-up supplies for area schools.
The Auxiliary collects backpacks and all items on the list such as notebooks, folders, and pencils. Erin Briscoe Public Relations Chairmen says the items donated are given to local schools, where counselors look for children in need from the start of the new year throughout the year.
“The items collected are provided to local schools where counselors and teachers identify children in need at the start of the school and throughout the year, for instance when a child’s backpack wears down,” Briscoe said.
The Auxiliary wants to avert from teachers paying for the supplies with their own money.
“JA hopes to prevent our teachers from purchasing supplies for children out of their own pockets,” Briscoe said.
Last year the Auxiliary was able to provide 45 backpacks full of supplies to local children and hopes to raise the number of backpacks this year to 60 through these drives.
Junior Auxiliary is a non-profit organization that has been benefiting children in the community for 30 years. The Auxiliary’s objectives of the association are to unite all in one body all Junior Auxiliary chapters and members to promote National and individual purposes; to encourage a member to render charitable services which are beneficial to the general public, with particular emphasis on children.
