The first forum is tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Taylor Community Center for District 3 candidates.

The League of Women Voters Oxford/North Mississippi will be facilitating several candidate forums for the upcoming primary elections.

The “Listen, Learn, Vote” forums will kick off tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Taylor Community Center for candidates running for District 3 supervisor.

All members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate.

More than 40 candidates are involved in contested county races. In the races for county supervisors, the forums will be held within each district to encourage community attendance.

These moderated forums will focus on allowing candidates in contested primary elections to make a brief timed presentation of their positions, followed by questions from the audience.

The schedule of forums:
Lafayette County Supervisors
District 1: Oxford-Lafayette Public Library, Tuesday, July 23, 6-8 p.m.
District 2: Oxford-Lafayette Public Library, Monday, July 29, 6-8 p.m.
District 3: Taylor Community Center, Monday, July 22, 6-8 p.m; Gordon Center, Abbeville, Saturday, July 27, 10-11:30 a.m.; College Hill Community Center, Thursday, Aug. 1, 6-8 p.m.
District 4: Lafayette Civic Center, Monday, July 29, 6-8 p.m.
County Officers – Circuit Clerk, Tax Collector, Justice Court Judge and Sheriff, Oxford-Lafayette Public Library, Tuesday, July 30, 6-8 p.m.
Mississippi House Representatives for Districts 5 and 10 – Lafayette County Chancery Court Building, Thursday, July 25, 6-8 p.m.

Uncontested primary candidates have been invited but will not have speaking opportunities. Plans are in the works for the League to host forums again in October for the general election candidates as well as for statewide election candidates.

The League is a nonpartisan political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government and never supports or opposes any political party or candidate.
