OPD Arrests Two for Multiple DUIs in Unrelated Incidents
The Oxford Police Department arrested two men recently for driving under the influence with both having two or more previous DUI convictions.
On Thursday, June 13, an officer with OPD received a call from 911 in regards to a man passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle.
Officers arrived and found Leonard Campbell, 34, of Oxford passed out with open containers of alcohol inside the vehicle.
A DUI investigation was started and officers learned Campbell had a least three prior DUI convictions.
He was arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center where he was charged with DUI-Fourth, possession of drug paraphernalia and open containers. He was booked on a $15,000 bond.
On Saturday, June 15, an officer noticed a vehicle in front of him on Highway 7 was going over the posted speed limit. By the time the officer caught up with the vehicle, it was traveling at 100 mph. The officer activated his emergency signals and stopped the vehicle on University Avenue.
The officer suspected the driver, DeMarkous Dennis, 26, of Abbeville, was under the influence. During a DUI investigation, the officer discovered Dennis had a least two prior DUI convictions.
He was charged with DUI-Third, speeding, driving while license suspended and no insurance. He was booked on a $10,000 bond.
