Day of Prayer is a national holiday held May 2 each year. In Oxford, it is led by First Baptist Church, but the event is open to everyone of all religions in the community.

The goal of National Day of Prayer is for people across the nation to pray for the country and the well-being of the citizens of the U.S.

The day will start with a free lunch at the Baptist church at 11 a.m. They will serve hot dogs, sandwiches and chips. It will also provide a shuttle for those who want to attend the program but lack transportation.

The program will be held on the south lawn of courthouse at 12:15 p.m. During the program representatives from each sector of Oxford’s government—like the ROTC, education and city leaders—will be in attendance. Don Gan, the Baptist minister, will speak in solidarity and lead the prayer with other church leaders from the community. The 2nd grade class from the Regents School of Oxford will sing during the program.

“Oxford is no different from other towns, it has the same hope as any other city,” said Sarah Pugh, co-chairman of Day of Prayer. “Turn to the Lord and ask him to direct our steps because ultimately that is what is going to happen anyway.”

Push said God expects us to pray for our city and for our nation.

“And that’s just what we are doing,” Pugh said.
