Spring Weather Touted for Double Decker Crowds

Despite a drunk backhoe driver and towing 20 cars, Oxford Police Interim Chief Jeff McCutchen said this year’s Double Decker Arts Festival was a smooth one for local officers.

“We made a few arrests but nothing out of the ordinary considering the large crowd,” McCutchen said. “The Visit Oxford staff and all of the city workers made this another great event.”

OPD made a total of 47 arrests Friday-Sunday, with 11 DUIs and 17 for public drunkenness.

The perfect spring weather Friday and Saturday helped populate the popular art and music festival.

“We had large crowds early and they remained steady throughout the day,” said Lee Ann Stubbs, Double Decker coordinator for Visit Oxford.

By 7:30 p.m., the crowds to see headliner Jason Isbell and 400 Unit were backed up to the Lafayette County Courthouse.

“The weather could not have been more perfect throughout the weekend,” Stubbs said. “All-in-all, it was an awesome weekend for the city of Oxford.”
Before the festival kicked-off Saturday, more than 1,700 people started their day off with a jog. – a really long jog.

This year’s Double Decker Spring Run 10 and 5K Races saw record numbers, said Pam Swain, race director and senior vice president of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce.

“The races went great for this year,” Swain said Monday. “This was our biggest and best race to date.”

Swain said total race registrations came to 1,720 runners.

“We average a growth of about 11 runners a year,” Swain said. “We feel like given the beautiful weather we had this weekend, people really wanted to get out that morning and start the day off with the race.”
