Music is a big part of Oxford’s beloved Double Decker Arts Festival. The first performances of the 24th annual weekend kicked off tonight.
Thousands from across the country travel to experience Double Decker’s unique art, tasty food, and varied music.
Nashville, Tennessee singer Lilly Hiatt got the festival to a rocking start tonight with her opening set. Jackson area resident Robert Dinelt is a long time fan of Hiatt’s, and said he is excited to see her perform.
“(She’s) picked up a lot of awards and recognition the last couple years,” Dinelt said. “So, it’s fun to see her career kind of take off. She deserves it.”
Thacker Mountain Radio Hour and blues-rock guitarist Eric Gales were also part of tonight’s line up.
Booking the festival’s musical talent is nearly a year long process that festival coordinators and Proud Larry’s Productions work on together.
Dinelt said he is impressed each year by the festival and the talented lineup they are able to obtain.
“It’s a great event all around. You’ve got the music, the weather, beautiful town. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit,” Dinelt said. “The whole lineup is great.”
Music has the powerful ability to bring people together of all ages. That is exactly what brings back Oxford resident Teresa Adams and her family every year.
“We just really enjoy bringing our boys here, and it’s a way to get them to see live music, and not in a venue or bar,” Adams said.
Double Decker coordinator Lee Ann Stubbs said they are expecting record breaking crowds this weekend, anywhere between 60,000-65,000 people.
Musical performances will continue all day tomorrow. The highly anticipated headline act Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will take the stage at 8:30 p.m.
In addition to music, numerous art and food vendors will set up shop on the Square Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take in all Oxford has to offer atop the famous Double Decker bus.
