Ole Miss Associated Student Body (ASB) presidential candidates Leah Davis and Barron Mayfield are advancing to the runoff election. Elections will be held Thursday, April 4.
As candidates heard their results last night, April 2, crowds of supporters screamed and cheered for their victories. The two candidates celebrated, but remained focused on their campaigns.
“We are about to strategize, and we are really going to hold onto our platform and make sure we are reaching out to the campus as a whole—every single demographic—so they know how much we care,” Davis said with tears in her eyes. “We are going to bring this thing home.”
Barron Mayfield received 38.79% of the majority vote, but says he isn’t going to let this moment of happiness stop him from driving his campaign forward.
“We are going to keep doing what we’ve been doing. We’ve been working really hard so we are going to hit the ground running tonight and keep it rolling for two more days,” Mayfield said.
Both candidates expressed how appreciative they are of their respective teams.
“My friends were absolutely amazing from the time I told them I wanted to run; they just hit the ground running. From social media to texting people individually to asking them to vote, (they were) advocates for my campaign,” Davis said.
Mayfield gave hugs to all of his friends and wiped the tears from his eyes.
“They have been there supporting me, encouraging me, loving me, and being patient with me through this whole process, and I couldn’t have done it without my amazing friends and great team,” Mayfield said.
Though the night was fun and emotional for both candidates, the campaign rituals continue, they said. Students can find Davis and Mayfield on Business Row tomorrow, adjacent to the J.D.Williams Library, talking about their campaigns and handing out stickers.
