Lafayette High School English teacher Marisa Atkinson is asking for the community’s help to bring her students on a two-day trip to the Gilder-Lehrman Institute’s Hamilton Education Program in New Orleans.
The trip would include a matinee performance of the musical “Hamilton,” a workshop with the cast and a tour of the National World War II Museum.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for these students from rural communities to travel and experience first-hand things they have read and learned about in the classroom,” Atkinson said.
Atkinson is asking for donations to help cover most of the costs of the trip for her students, which is estimated to be about $3,500. Costs include hotel rooms and parking expenses for the buses.
“I hope to make this experience as economical as possible for students,” she said.
Students who wish to attend the event have to complete required course work before the trip. Atkinson said 94 students in 10th-12th grade have expressed interest in doing the work and going to New Orleans.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for donations as well as a DonorsChoose page. Donations can also be mailed to Lafayette County School District, C/O Marisa Atkinson, 160 Commodore Drive, Oxford, MS 38655 or dropped off at Lafayette High School.
