Budgeting for medical services at Oxford’s Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi is now easier after a federal mandate required all hospitals in the United States to post their master price lists online and made accessible to the general public.
The detailed lists for BMH in Oxford are available to view online and are separated by either Charge Description or by Diagnosis Related Groups.
The lists of the costs include those that could be incurred by a patient during a hospital visit – medications, services or tests performed and supplies used during their stay.
The 2010 Affordable Care Act required hospitals to make these lists available to the public, however, hospitals were not required to publish them online until Jan. 1, 2019.
The new mandate is an effort by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to improve price transparency in health care.
“Baptist Memorial Health Care supports the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ efforts to increase price transparency for patients,” stated BMHC officials in an emailed statement. “Baptist is committed to educating and advocating for our patients and providing value-based, quality care.”
The webpage also connects patients with BMH’s Expense Navigator tool, which Baptist created more than a decade ago to help patients understand hospital charges, out-of-pocket costs or co-pays and payment options, including helping them access Medicaid or charity care.
