For those who live and breathe punk rock, from British Invasion to modern pop punk, lace up your Converse and head to Proud Larry’s tonight. The local venue is hosting its inaugural Punk Prom event at 9 p.m.
The event’s Facebook page promises a “counter-culture night of dancing, thrashing and general indecency.” Punk Prom features a photo booth with proceeds going to Oxfilm Society, a crowning of Punk Prom King and Queen with $25 gift cards to The End of All Music and live music from a punk cover band with opening Memphis act Indeed, We Digress.
According to Matthew Clements, local musician and chef at St. Leo and The Blind Pig, the night’s setlist is a secret, but attendees can expect a wide variety of punk music throughout an eight to ten song set.
“It’s going to be a lot of more on the classic end,” Clements said. “There will be a couple of surprises in there that some people might scratch their heads about, but we put everything we felt really defines punk music and what it is.”
Clements, alongside Event Coordinator Barney Thompson, collaborated with local artists and businesses to create an interesting experience and exceed expectations from September’s successful Emo Night.
“When you do something weird like that or even this, there’s already precedent for it in culture elsewhere, but we haven’t done these types of events here,” Thompson said. “It’s about trying to learn the balance of making it very marketable and enjoyable to everyone while keeping the purest sense of what the theme actually is. It’s the challenging part, but also the fun part: creating this authentic experience.”
From interest they garnered from advertising efforts and Emo Night success, Clements expects Punk Prom to sell out and Proud Larry’s to hit maximum capacity early in the night.
Entrance to the event is $9.
