The Jackson Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred at about 4:40 p.m. in front of the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
JPD confirmed two children were injured after shots were fired into a vehicle.
The children, ages 1 and 3, were in a vehicle about 4:30 p.m. when someone shot into it, UPD Chief James Davis said during a press conference. One child was shot in the torso and the other was shot in the leg.
Davis said the shooter drove up and shot into the car. The mother got the kids out of the car and took them to UMMC. She was not injured.
The suspect fled the scene in a Nissan sedan with a paper tag.
Students and faculty remembers received texts at 4:42 p.m. that there was an active shooter in the Parking Garage B and warned people to run to safety.
At about 5:10 p.m., the alert was cleared.
This is a developing story.
