President Donald J. Trump will be in Tupelo, Monday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. at the Tupelo Regional Airport to cast his support for U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in wake of the upcoming midterm runoff. Trump will then travel to Biloxi later in the evening to complete his Mississippi tour.
The president’s visit falls on the heels of the U.S. Senate runoff election that will be held Nov. 27. Mississippians will go to the polls to vote for either Hyde-Smith or her Democrat opponent Mike Espy. The selection will be monumental either way, as Mississippi will be represented by the first woman or the first African American senator in state history.
Trump recently made an appearance in Mississippi Oct. 2 at the Landers Center in Southaven for a “Make America Great Again” rally. His “Hello, Mississippi, hello,” welcoming statement garnered cheers from more than 8,000 people as he kickstarted his 2020 election campaign. Hyde-Smith was in attendance, welcoming Trump as the “best president we’ve ever had” to the Hospitality State.
The president continued to show his support for Hyde-Smith following two videos of her saying she would attend a public hanging if a Tupelo cattle rancher invited her, and her support of voter suppression. The “public hanging” comment drew criticism from several local and national media outlets hours after its posting, and Hyde-Smith responded by saying, “I used an exaggerated expression of regard, and any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous.”
