The Oxford Chargers play host to the Madison Central Jaguars this evening in the first round of the high school playoffs at Bobby Holcomb Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Oxford (9-2, 6-1) enters as the No. 2 seed in the 6A playoffs after defeating Tupelo 33-13 at home last week on senior night.
“Our team certainly celebrated a senior night victory over Tupelo,” Oxford head coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “We quickly moved on and turned our focus towards the playoffs.”
The Chargers have excelled on the gridiron with only two losses on the season. Leading up to the game Cutcliffe said he was pleased with the focus and preparation his squad has put in this week.
“We know that we have a big challenge ahead of us with Madison Central,” he said.
Madison Central rolls into town with an 8-3 record on the season. The Jaguars ended the regular season with a 6-0 victory over Greenville.
“I expect a great football game…Madison Central is talented and extremely well-prepared,” Cutcliffe said.
The Jaguars offense is led this season by junior quarterback Jimmy Holliday who is averaging 92.1 rushing yards a game and 119.8 yards passing.
Oxford and Madison Central both have their own strengths on offense: the Jaguars have 223 yards per game rushing while the Chargers average 142 yards passing.
“We’re going to have to play at a high level for four quarters, but that’s what to expect when you are in the playoffs,” Cutcliffe said.
