The National Weather Service announced Monday night at approximately 7 p.m. that Lafayette County, and other surrounding areas, were officially under a tornado watch.

The watch remains in effect until at least 3 a.m., according to the NWS.

The service stated that this announcement was made due to conditions that are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area.

Earlier today, NWS meteorologist Samantha Wright told Hottytoddy.com that Oxford is in the center of the greatest tornado potential area. Reports indicate severe thunderstorms will develop ahead of a cold front that will move across the Mid-South and eventually hit the Oxford area.

Wright said this inclement weather could possibly include hazardous hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.

The NWS advised that residents in areas under a tornado watch take precautions before, during and after the watch has been lifted.

The Emergency Management Agency for Lafayette County provides a shelter map for area residents in case of emergencies such as tonight’s possible severe weather. The shelters are small concrete structures that hold up to 12 people, said Steve Quarels, EMA director for Lafayette County.

Quarles said the shelters are open and ready for residents to use.
