The Ole Miss women’s basketball season gets underway this afternoon as they host LeMoyne-Owen in an exhibition game at 3 p.m. Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin met with the media following practice on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming season.

Over the weekend, Ole Miss took the court in a closed scrimmage against the University of Memphis. The Rebels were able to use that as a tool going into the season by watching film and making corrections for better execution.

“We are heavily focused on what we need to do to be successful,” McPhee-McCuin said.

The Rebels regained a key leadership figure in senior guard Shandricka Sessoms after she suffered a season-ending injury last season. Sessoms is “back and looking great”, McPhee-McCuin said.

On Tuesday, the Southeastern Conference office announced its Preseason All-SEC Teams and Sessoms was named to the second team. McPhee-McCuin said she was excited to have such a special player back on the court for this season.

“I told her that (earning Preseason Second-Team) was a sign of respect,” she said. “She didn’t even play in the conference last year, so for them to put her on there means a lot.”

Coming into the season McPhee-McCuin said her outlook is to see her team play hard on both ends of the floor and compete for 40 minutes.

“I have never been a coach that has been worried about the wins and losses. Even in our most successful seasons, it has always been about the process and the things that we can control like playing hard, getting defensive stops, understanding what the gameplan is and following through,” she said.

Ole Miss hosts LeMoyne-Owen at 3 p.m. today inside the Pavilion.
