Oxford Film Festival to Show “Mississippi Yearning” Tonight at the Powerhouse

The Oxford Film Festival is presenting a free screening of the documentary film, “Mississippi Yearning”, an extended feature version of the Hoka Winner: “Finding Cleveland” produced by Baldwin Chiu, directed by Larissa Lam, and edited by Dwight Buhler. The screening will take place tonight, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse located at 413 South 14th Street.

“We are excited to watch a filmmaker expand his award-winning short to continue exploring Asian history of Mississippi,” said Melanie Addington, executive director of the Oxford Film Festival. “It’s such a unique story and we appreciate the filmmakers bringing back the feature.” 

A synopsis of the film reads as follows: After his father abandoned him as a baby, retired Chinese man, Charles Chiu, works to uncover the truth about the family he never knew. Chiu is the son of KC Lou, who they learn was the owner of a store in an unexpected place: Cleveland, Mississippi. Through Chiu’s investigation alongside his son, they discover more than they could’ve imagined about their mysterious lineage and even more about American history.
