Rep. Jay Hughes is a lot of things.

He’s an attorney, a chef, a U.S. Army veteran, Oxford’s representative in the Mississippi House of Representatives and a candidate in the 2019 race for the state’s lieutenant governor.

Garrison English, Hughes’ campaign manager gets snacks ready before the ribbon cutting ceremony.

And now, he’s a member of the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce that hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for the opening of Hughes campaign center on South Lamar.

“It’s interesting that I joined the Chamber as a campaign,” Hughes said. “What a campaign really is, is a major business that starts from nothing, has to grow statewide with employees, marketing and distribution to 3 million people and then the business closes – all in about a year. Hopefully, this one will close with me having a new job.”

Hughes came to Oxford to attend the Robert C. Khayat School of Law at the University of Mississippi in the late 1980s. He graduated from law school in 1991. He started his political career in 2013 when he was elected as an Oxford alderman. In 2015, he ran for the Oxford House seat and won with 55.1 percent of the votes.

Before cutting the ribbon, Chamber board member Wayne Andrews said the chamber was excited to welcome Hughes’s campaign headquarters.

“Our Chamber is a very active and exciting part of our community and it celebrates both the depth of talent and creativity we have here and our sense of community and someone who exemplifies that is Jay,” Andrews said.

Parked outside of his new office at 2209 S. Lamar Blvd., was Hughes “Imagine Wagon,” that he joked was more popular on social media than his campaign.

“We’ve traveled 14,000 miles so far, meeting people, seeing what’s great about Mississippi,” he said Tuesday.

Interesting that the story did not mention he is a democrat. Hotly toddy is a left wing mouth piece, so I guess they did not want to damage his chance ny identifying him as a leftist.

    Shame on hotty toddy.
