The Ole Miss women’s basketball team held its first official team practice of the Yolett McPhee-McCuin era inside the Touhy Basketball Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Rebels had a very spirited session to gear up for the 2018-19 season.

At the end of practice, coach McPhee-McCuin gave her thoughts on how the team handled the first day and was pleased with the great energy everyone had on the court.

“I thought they came out and everyone was excited and locked in,” McPhee-McCuin said. “Obviously there is a lot we need to implement and work on, but for the most part, I felt like they controlled the controllables, which is their attitude and their effort.”

The whole team is having to grasp a new system in place with a new coaching staff and the whole team is trying to get better according to McPhee-McCuin.

“This is a new system for all parties involved,” she said. “I’m just looking forward to growing with them and getting them to build chemistry on the floor, and that will happen over time.”

Senior Shandricka Sessom is returning this season after tearing her ACL during the first quarter against Middle Tennessee that ended her season. Prior to her injury, Sessom was averaging 15.1 points per game, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Last season, she only played in seven games and that did not count enough for a season.

“Drique is coming, slowly but surely, but we expect to have her back for the first of the season, and we look forward to having her out there,” McPhee-McCuin said.

Another player who is returning from injury is Mimi Reid who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the preseason. Reid has been with the team all summer according to McPhee-McCuin.

Ole Miss opens the season against LeMoyne-Owen in an exhibition game on Nov. 2. The coaches will challenge the team on being consistent leading up to game day.

“I think with consistency, it’s maturing and it’s getting better,” she said. “It all ties around to the word, just being consistent and working on getting one percent better every day.”
