On any given day, the Oxford Barksdale Boys & Girls Club is filled with more than 150 children, exercising their bodies as well as their brains.

The club gives children ages 6 to 18 a safe place to be after school each day and during the summer months with its all-day summer program.

To keep the program affordable, the Oxford Boys and Girls Advisory Board is hosting a fundraiser in October that organizers hope becomes an annual, signature event.

“The Boys and Girls Club doesn’t really have a regular, annual fundraiser, a signature event,” said Amy Goodin, event chair. “We wanted something nice that could highlight the Boys and Girls Club and offer something unique to Oxford.”

The Chef’s Table will feature a three-course meal and wine pairing provided by City Grocery Catering starting with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at The Powerhouse.

The dining room doors will open at 7 p.m.

Goodin said the highlight of the evening will be a cooking demonstration by local chef John Currence.

“He will demonstrate how to make his famous shrimp and grits,” Goodin said.

Local musician Kolbe Alsobrooks will provide music during the cocktail hour.

There are only 64 individual tickets available at $60 a piece. Corporate sponsorship with half table and full table reservations are available at $500 and $1,000.

There will also be a silent and live auction during the event with a variety of prizes including a football signed by all of the SEC football coaches.

The Boys and Girls Club averages about 175 students each day and offers homework help and life enrichment programs. Cost is only $50 a semester and scholarships are offered to families who cannot afford the tuition.

“We are trying to keep (Boys & Girls) affordable for anyone to attend who wants to,” Goodin said.

Tickets are available at bit.ly/thechefstable2018.
