Committee Formed to Review Applications for Animal Shelter

With proposals to take over and run the Oxford animal shelter due by Thursday, the Oxford Board of Aldermen is putting together a committee to interview and ultimately decide who run the area’s animal control services and shelter.
In August, the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society announced it would not be renewing its contract with the city to provide animal control services or run the shelter on McElroy Drive as of Sept. 30. The OLHS board has stated it will be pursuing opening a low-cost spay and neuter clinic.
Requests for Proposals were advertised shortly after and so far, about three groups have shown interest. The deadline for groups to submit their RFPs is Thursday.
Last week, the board approved an eight-member committee who will conduct interviews with the groups who’s applied.
The committee will include aldermen Janice Antonow and Preston Taylor, Supervisor David Rikard, Greg Pinion with Oxford Building and Grounds, Mark Levy with Oxford’s Public Works Department, a local veterinarian and two local citizens.
The group will begin interviews immediately and Antonow said the plan is to have a group selected by Aug. 24, with the selected group taking over operations at the shelter by Oct. 1.
No illegal drop-offs allowed
Also last week, the aldermen approved an ordinance outlawing anyone from dropping off animals inside the fence at the dog park located next to the shelter or on the grounds of the shelter since the shelter will be closed temporarily as the new group moves in to take over and the shelter is cleaned up.
Anyone caught dropping off animals when the shelter is closed or inside the fence at the dog park could face misdemeanor criminal charges.
