For students entering their freshman year at Ole Miss, home cooked meals will be missed as they begin their adventure in their new home away from home.

There’s nothing quite like comfort food—mashed potatoes, cornbread and all things in between—that helps an exhausted mind, body and soul from the day-to-day grind of college.

HottyToddy.com selected the top five places for students, and LOU residents, to grab a warm bite of comfort food with a large, refreshing glass of sweet tea.

Located at the intersection of North Lamar and Old Hwy 7—better known as “the 3-way”—sits Mama Jo’s, a small southern restaurant prepared by the one and only, Mama Jo.

Those who find this small town kitchen will discover all the best dishes like catfish, collard greens and peas. Trust us, there’s not a single thing on the menu that won’t warm your soul.

2) Ajax Diner

With an exterior bright as the golden sun, Ajax Diner stands out from the rest of the establishments located on The Square. Nestled in between JCG Graphics and Bacchus on The Square, the old school dinner offers po-boys, burgers and veggie plates.

The doors for this well-known Oxford staple open at 11:30 a.m., Monday through Saturday. Word of advice — be ready to snag a table; they fill more quickly than the Vaught.

3) Larson’s Cashsaver

Although it looks like your typical local grocery store, inside the walls of Larson’s is a hidden gem—the hot bar.

Located behind the Eastgate Regions Bank on University Avenue, the lunch specials offer the best of the best with casseroles, fried chicken and desserts. Whether you’re looking for corn on the cob or spaghetti, Larson’s offers a variety of home cooked favorites for anyone needing a little slice of home.

4) Handy Andy Grocery

Handy Andy Grocery offers some of the best BBQ in Oxford, and has done so for years.

The small establishment, located on North Lamar across from the Midtown Shopping Center, provides LOU residents and visitors with some of the best-cooked BBQ, especially if you go the extra mile and add a fresh scoop of coleslaw on top.

5) B’s Bar-B-Q

Though it might be located off-the-beaten path on Old College Hill Road, B’s Bar-B-Q not only offers ribs, smoked chicken and delicious side dishes, it also has one of the best plate breakfasts in town.

Sitting across from Lost Pizza Co. and Clark Jewelry, B’s morning breakfast has everything to make you feel like you’re sitting in your mother’s kitchen on a Sunday morning.
