Lafayette County children will head back to school Friday while Oxford students have a few more days to enjoy their summer break.
The Lafayette County School District board members voted in February to begin the 2018-2019 school year on Aug. 3, while the Oxford School District choose to begin their new year on Aug. 8.
LCSD Superintendent Adam Pugh says the early start date is something the board chose with teachers in mind.
“Our teachers like to start school on a Friday,” he said during a board meeting earlier this year. “That way, they can do all the first day of school activities and then both they and the students have the weekend to gear up for the rest of the school year.”
The original start day for the OSD was proposed to be Aug. 6; however, the board changed the start day in February to Aug. 8 after parents approached some of the board members saying the earlier day interfered with vacation plans.
The two school districts have traditionally attempted to start at the same time so that the students who also attend the Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology, which followed the Lafayette district’s calendar, could start classes at the same time. The approximately 75 Oxford students that will be attending The Tech this coming school year may miss about three days of instruction.
OSD Superintendent Brian Harvey said some of The Tech teachers are on extended day contracts; however, some are not.
“We are continuing to work on a solution,” he said Friday.
Open House for LCSD students grades Pre-K through second grade will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Sixth-grade students will have their open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m on Wednesday as well. Third to fifth-grade students will have their open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday. The open house for high school will be 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Oxford School District’s open houses will all be on Aug. 6 at various times. Bramlett and Oxford elementary schools will be from 3 to 5 p.m.; Della Davidson and Oxford Intermediate from 4 to 6 p.m.; Oxford Middle School from 5 to 7 p.m.; Oxford High School from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Oxford Learning Center from 5 to 7 p.m.
