Thacker Mountain Radio Receives $17,400 Grant from MAC
Thacker Mountain Radio Hour was awarded a $17,400 grant on Monday, July 16 from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). The grant is for operation costs.
Kate Teague, executive director and producer of Thacker Mountain Radio, said the radio show has been receiving this particular grant from MAC since 2014.
“[The grant] will give us the opportunity to continue celebrating and documenting the diverse sound and stories of an evolving South,” Teague said.
This grant is a portion of the nearly $1.4 million in grants the Commission will award in 2018-2019. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
MAC is a state agency that serves residents of Mississippi by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
The radio show records approximately 33 live shows yearly, which consists of 12 in the spring and 12 in the fall as well as 7- 8 on the road in various cities across the state.
It is currently recorded at Off Square Books—located at 129 Courthouse Square—with occasional shows at The Lyric Oxford.
In 2001, the program went statewide after being picked up for broadcast by Mississippi Public Broadcasting, which now airs the show every Saturday night at 7 p.m. on the radio and online. The show just celebrated its 20th year anniversary in October 2017.
