Ole Miss Softball Signs Junior College Outfielder Kenzie Young
Ole Miss softball head coach Mike Smith signed Kenzie Young to the 2018 class on Friday.
Young is a junior college transfer from Butler Community College with two years of eligibility. She comes to Oxford as a 5’4” right-handed outfielder.
“We are excited to add Kenzie to our program,” said Smith. “She brings championship experience and success already at the collegiate level. She has a gritty, blue-collar work ethic and loves to compete with the best and be the best.”
The Derby, Kansas native was nothing short of an offensive force during her two seasons with the Grizzlies, helping lead Butler to a 111-7 overall record, the 2017 NJCAA Division I National Championship and a return trip to the NJCAA Semifinals a year ago.
Just the third player in Butler-history to be named an NJCAA All-American twice, Young batted .488 this past season, crushing 14 home runs and providing incredible run production with 68 runs scored and 60 RBIs. Despite suffering a season-ending injury during the final conference game of the season, Young led the Grizzlies in five offensive categories, including batting average, on-base percentage (.572), runs, triples (7) and stolen bases (37).
In her freshman season, she had a .453 batting average in 2017 with a .583 on-base percentage. The speedster’s 90 runs scored was good for fourth-most in the nation, while she led the team with 68 runs scored and seven triples. Young also drove in 60 runs, ranking third among all Grizzlies.
An All-KJCCC first-team outfield selection in both seasons at Butler, Young finishes as the Grizzlies’ career leader in triples (13) and runs (158) while ranking in the top 10 in home runs (22, 10th), RBIs (131, 4th), hits (9th), batting average (.468, 3rd) and stolen bases (63, 5th).
