The end of music festival season is nearing, but it’s not over until the artists at Sloss Music & Arts Festival sing.

The festival is happening this weekend July 14-15 at the old Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama, and numerous big name artists are set to jam out on the Steam, Blast, Seasick and Monster Energy Shed stages.
In the midst all the music, food, drinks, and band merchandise available purchase is an activity indicative only to Sloss — a live iron pouring.
Sloss Furnaces was once the largest manufacturer of pig iron in the world, but the facility has since ceased operation. The Sloss Metal Arts Program serves a national community of professional artists who work in cast iron and other metals. The live iron pouring demonstrations will allow patrons to interact and purchase a one-of-a-kind iron souvenir, according to the website.
Several Ole Miss students and recent graduates said they’re excited to join in on the fun this weekend.
Recent IMC graduate Anna-Claire Griffin said she likes the “smaller feel” of the festival compared to the mega-festivals elsewhere in the South.
“I love the diverse selection of genres they also have playing,” she said. “I’m most excited about the craft beer garden, Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell and Margo Price.”
Current student and facility manager at Ole Miss campus recreation Anna Beavers said she and her boyfriend are making the ultimate weekend out of it.
“I originally bought Sunday tickets as a graduation present for my boyfriend because he loves Chris Stapleton,” she said. “And he was so excited to go to a music festival that we ended up getting Saturday tickets too. We’re camping out at the Oak Mountain State Park for the weekend.”
