The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Monday it is investing an additional $55.9 million in Mississippi rivers and tributary systems. Sardis Lake is receiving an additional $3,289,000 allotment (for a total of $9.2 million) to help fund its operation and maintenance budget.
Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith praised the Corps of Engineers for their dedication to Mississippi after they released their FY2018 Work Plan on Monday, which outlined additional funding for ongoing Civil Works projects.
“Mississippians will see benefits from the Army Corps of Engineers decision to apply additional funding to water, wastewater and other infrastructure programs in our state,” Hyde-Smith said. “I credit the Army Corps for identifying priority projects that have local support and can help improve public safety and the quality of life in Mississippi.”
According to the Work Plan, additional funds will be used by operations at Sardis Lake to:

  • Install lining in collection ditch
  • Perform bank stabilization at Hays Crossing
  • Replace outfall structure downstream of Toe Ditch
  • Perform operation and maintenance of dam and structures
  • Develop plans and specifications for Walker Landing
  • Construct permanent Dike below overflow spillway
  • Pave and/or resurface road at Clear Creek Recreation Area
  • Provide additional surveillance and maintenance of recreation areas;
  • Restore Wilbourn Creek & Tillman’s Pond
  • Acquire law enforcement service contract
  • Perform Civil Works Geospatial Land Data Migration to CorpsMap
  • Fund Wildlife and Habitat Management

Public Affairs Chief for the Vicksburg District, Greg Raimondo, said aside from how late in the year the announcement came out, it isn’t out of the ordinary to receive additional money to fund projects.
