No. 4 Ole Miss Takes Down Arkansas State, 15-8
The No. 4 Ole Miss offense was on fire against the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Tuesday as they picked up their 40th victory of the season with a 15-8 win.
Ole Miss (40-13) jumped out on the scoreboard first with a three run spot in the first inning with a two-RBI single off the bat of Cole Zabowski and the Rebels never looked back. Zabowski finished as one of seven Rebels with multiple hits on the night and one of five with multiple RBI.
Arkansas State responded quickly in the home half of the first with a solo home run by the lead off batter G Hawkins off of the Rebels starter Jordan Fowler. The Red Wolves scratched another run across in the second inning.
Ole Miss’ offense kept battling as Nick Fortes drove one run home on a double in the second, and the Rebels added two more in the third on a two-run homer by Tyler Keenan. Keenan scored on a Grae Kessinger single in the fifth and again on a Michael Fitzsimmons single in the sixth. Thomas Dillard homered in that sixth inning as well.
The Rebels put up runs in every inning except the fourth and the ninth. All 15 runs came on 17 hits on the night.
In the sixth, Arkansas State threatened with four runs in the frame on a pair of home runs by Kyle MacDonald and Jacob Jablonski. However, the Ole Miss offense got three of those runs right back. Kessinger went deep for Ole Miss’ third home run of the night to start the seventh inning, and the Rebels plated two more on a Keenan single to take a 13-6 lead midway through the inning.
McDonald sent another ball out of the yard, in the seventh for a two-run shot, but Fitzsimmons answered with a dinger of his own in the eighth for the Rebels fourth home run of the night. Kessinger then add the final run on the board with a sacrifice fly.
Flower picked up his sixth win of the season going 5.0 innings of work and only giving up one earned run on four hits, while striking out four batters and allowing two walks.
This weekend, Ole Miss will close out the 2018 regular-season with a three-game series tilt at Alabama. The series begins Thursday night.
