Chamber Seeks Help for OPD Officer and His Family After Fire Destroyed Their Home
A fundraising drive is underway to help the Oxford family of Hardie and Katrina Meeks, who lost their home to a fire on Tuesday.
Ryan Miller, chair of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce’s PHlash Drive, issued an alert today seeking assistance for the Meeks, who have two children—Ani, who turned 9 on the day of the fire, and Hayden, 10, both of whom attend Lafayette County schools.
Hardie Meeks is an investigator with the Oxford Police Department and owner of Blue Security. Katrina is a family advocate with Family Crisis Services. Hardie was selected as Hotty Toddy’s First Responder of the Month and OPD’s Officer of the Year in 2015.
“This is a challenge to you, our wonderful community of Oxford and Lafayette County, to give back to help this family in need,” Miller stated in the PHlash Alert sent out by the Chamber. “They are in need, and we are a community that rises to the occasion when people are in need. Let’s show the Meeks family that we love them.”
In addition to money, gift cards for restaurants, Kroger, Walmart, and clothing and shoe stores are the most important items that can be donated. Checks can be made out to Hardie Meeks.
For clothing, Hardie wears 38×34 pants, large and tall shirts and size 14 shoes. Katrina wears size 5/6 or medium clothes and size 8 ½ shoes. Ani wears size 7/8 clothes, size 3 shoes and is in the third grade. Hayden wears size 10/12 clothes, size 6 shoes and is in the fourth grade.
Other needs include wet wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, plastic bowls, plates and silverware, individually packaged snacks, cereals (Fruit Loops, Pops Cinnamon Toast Crunch) and Dove soap.
Both children like to play soccer. Ani likes coloring books and other crafts. Hayden likes sports. Both kids like to read.
Donations can be delivered through 5 p.m., Thursday, March 8, to the Chamber office at 299 Jackson Avenue West.
