Last year’s national women’s basketball champions roll into Oxford Thursday night for a shoot-out inside the Pavilion, giving Ole Miss a chance to score a season-changing upset.
Ole Miss will host the No. 4-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in a 6 p.m. tip-off.
Ole Miss (10-4, 0-1 SEC) is coming off a tough 73-72 loss at Arkansas on Sunday afternoon. The Rebels had the ball twice in the final 25 seconds, but a floater by Alissa Alston bounced off the rim and a gutsy in-bounds pass strategy by Alston backfired, giving Arkansas the ball as time expired.
Sophomore Shelby Gibson led Coach Matt Insell’s squad in scoring against the Razorbacks with 21 points while teammate Alston added 18 points and Madinah Muhammad chipped in 17.
South Carolina (12-1, 1-0 SEC) comes into town after a 61-59 victory over Texas A&M at home. The Gamecocks are led on the court by senior A’ja Wilson, who is averaging a double-double with 24.5 points and 11.2 rebounds every time she steps out on the floor.
South Carolina has a high-octane offense that averages 83.2 points per game and only gives up around 55.8 to their opponents. The Rebels are averaging 74.6 points per game and give up about 65.9.
The Gamecocks hold a 21-17 lead over the Rebels in the all-time series, including the last nine meetings. When these two face off in Oxford, Ole Miss holds an 8-7 advantage.
