Jackson native Eudora Welty won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, “The Optimist’s Daughter,” in 1973 and the National Book Award for “The Collected Works of Eudora Welty.” One of the country’s most celebrated fiction writers, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.
