Oxford artist Andi Sherrill Bedsworth has been awarded a $500 mini-grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC).
The grant funds will reimburse Bedsworth for her expenses attending the International Quilt Festival, held Nov. 5-7 in Houston, Texas, where she took a class and attended demonstrations to further her skills in the field of fiber arts.
The class focused on making a miniature wall hanging using vintage textiles and embroidery stitches, Bedsworth said.
The grant is a portion of the $1.3 million in grants the MAC has awarded and will award in 2017 and 2018. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Mississippi is home to many famous artists and performers who have set high standards for artistic achievement in our state,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. ”Mississippi artists tell the story of our state and contribute to its cultural richness. The Mississippi Arts Commission is honored to support their outstanding work.”
Bedsworth is a fiber artist and teacher in Oxford. She also runs an arts teaching business called Art To Go LLC. She teaches art and sewing in the North Mississippi area to both children and adults. She also coordinates the Oxford Fiber Arts Festival, held annually in January.
The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency serving residents of the state by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education; and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage.
Established in 1968, the Mississippi Arts Commission is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts, and the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources.
