A western-style film set in Mississippi will be the focus of a special Oxford Film Festival (OFF) screening next week at the Powerhouse.
OFF will screen “Blood Country,” directed and co-written by Travis Mills, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 15. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 or at the door, and all proceeds will go to OFF.

Based on the short story, “The Outlaw, the Sheriff and the Governor,” by Brookhaven native Robert E. Jones, “Blood Country” transports the viewer to Lawrence County, Mississippi, in 1884, where Joe Loftin stands accused of murdering his brother and the sheriff works to make sure justice is done.
Mills won the Hoka award for Best Mississippi Feature at the 2017 Oxford Film Festival with “Don’t Come Around Here.” “Blood Country” is the third film he’s shot in Mississippi, according to the Jackson Free Press. Mills came across the original short story in a book given to him by his grandfather. “It was just this crazy Western story set in Mississippi,” he told the Jackson Free Press. It’s just action-packed. I thought it would be the perfect movie.”
“Much stronger thematically than narratively, ‘Blood Country’ is an interesting depiction of frontier life at a pivotal time in American history,” wrote Jennie Kermode of eyeforfilm.com. “It’s beautiful to look at but doesn’t shy away from the darkness.”
The Oxford Film Festival was founded in 2003 to bring exciting, new and unusual films (and the people who create them) to North Mississippi. The annual five-day festival screens short and feature-length films in both showcase and competition settings, including narrative and documentary features and shorts; Mississippi narratives, documentaries and music videos; and narrative, documentary, animated and experimental shorts. The festival is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization.
