The Bluegrass State of Kentucky was the setting for a high-scoring affair between Ole Miss and Kentucky on Saturday afternoon as Ole Miss, in the last seconds, pulled out a 37-34 win over the Wildcats.
Ole Miss’ (4-5, 2-4 SEC) quarterback Jordan Ta’amu continued his impressive start in back-to-back games in a Rebel uniform as he passed for a new career high with 382 yards and 4 touchdowns. He found D.K. Metcalf in the corner of the end zone for a near-miraculous 7-yard game-winning touchdown.
Kentucky’s sophomore running back Benny Snell Jr. was a big component for the Wildcats as he rushed for a total of 176 yards and three touchdowns.
On a day on which a total of 71 points lit up the scoreboard, the Rebels found the end zone first in the game, after trailing the Wildcats 3-0, when Ta’amu threw a pass to wide receiver A.J. Brown from 13 yards out.
Snell scored the Wildcats’ first touchdown of the game in the second quarter. The Wildcats would then take a 13-10 lead.
Ole Miss wide receiver Van Jefferson recorded his first touchdown catch of the season from 20 yards out as the Rebels regained the lead 17-13.
But the back-and-forth continued, as Snell capped off a 13-play drive with a two-yard dash to pay dirt for his second score of the afternoon.
In the first half of play, the lead changed hands five different times before halftime. Kentucky took a 20-17 lead into the dressing rooms.
Late in the third quarter, Ole Miss tied the game back up at 27 points each on a 58-yard pass by Ta’amu to redshirt freshman D.K. Metcalf.
But Ta’amu and Metcalf saved the best for last, when the latter made a spectacular end-zone catch with just five seconds left on the clock – and a Kentucky defender all over him. The TD brought the Rebels back from a 34-30 deficit and gave them their second SEC win for the season.
Ole Miss returns to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium next Saturday to play Louisiana at 11 a.m. on SECNetwork.
