Oxford Prepares to Face Tupelo in Regular Season Finale

Published

on

The Oxford Chargers play their final regular season game Friday night as they travel to Tupelo to face the Golden Wave. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Oxford (8-3, 4-2) is coming off of a 15-6 victory over the Hernando Tigers. The Chargers defense held strong until the fourth quarter when the Tigers got on the scoreboard.
“It was a very interesting game with the weather,” Oxford head coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “I thought our team came out with a great mindset to handle the weather and really control what we can control. Earlier in the week, we challenged them that the weather was going to test their mental toughness, and I think they handled it really well.”
The Chargers have now won four straight heading into this week’s game against Tupelo.
Tupelo has run through region play this year unblemished with a 6-0 record and a 10-0 overall record. The Golden Wave offense is averaging 37.7 points per game. Tupelo’s defense has only given up 10.1 points per game. On average, Tupelo is carrying the ball 246.9 yards per game.
“Tupelo is an outstanding football team,” Cutcliffe said. “They are very talented on both sides of the ball and a complete team … well coached and don’t really have a weakness on either side of the ball. It’s going to take a great effort from us, starting with a great week of practice.”
Oxford can make the playoffs this season with a win over Tupelo or by a Horn Lake loss to Southaven. The Chargers have been impressive on the field this season.
“I think the team is continuing to grow,” Cutcliffe said. “We have found some different ways to win games. We have been playing consistently good defense all year. Offensively, we have had some ups and downs and some injuries, and we have found ways to win games.”
Fans can listen to the game on 95.5 FM.
