Tannehill Makes 'Affordable Housing' Top Priority for Oxford

In a Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday night, City Planning Director Judy Daniel said affordable housing will be the first priority as the city carries out its Vision 2037 plan.

“We appreciate the vision and commitment of the mayor and Board of Aldermen who adopted this comprehensive plan,” Daniel said. “There are other goals to be made. The first one that the mayor wants us to undertake will be to study our affordable housing issues.”
Mayor Tannehill was in Jackson to be recognized by Mississippi Top 50 as one of the state’s 50 most influential leaders. Mississippi Top 50 is sponsored by Y’all Politics and Supertalk Mississippi. She cannot be reached for comment at this time.
Daniel said in the meeting the need for affordable housing often conflicts with the concerns of student housing in a college town.
“It is unavoidable in a university town, especially one where the university and the town are about the same size,” she said.
Substantial changes were made to the affordable housing section of the plan to address some of these concerns. For example, limiting the number of four-bedroom apartments, changing parking requirements for multi-family housing, encouraging apartments on upper floors of commercial buildings and requiring percentages of detached (stand-alone) housing  in mixed-type neighborhood residential districts.
